I forgot to add that some plants use roots to store energy. Like how an animal will save a big pile of food for winter, some palmts make a big root that stores nutrients and sugar. These make good food to eat because we also eat nutrients and sugar. Some examples are potatoes, carrots, radishes, and taro. Trees dont do this because they store it in their trunks instead.

Roots are like straws to get water out of the ground. trees are heavy so the roots anchor it; stand a pole on the ground and it falls over, put it partway in the ground and it stays. They also send signals to other plants and fungi networks, like neurons in a brain.
