I don't know that it, strictly speaking, has to be this way but it certainly happened to me. As far as I can tell as we get older we have more obligations that fill our time, and even if they don't individually take much time the fact that they break up the large chunks of free time we used to have makes it much more difficult to do things with friends (if you would do an activity that takes four hours but you have two non-consecutive two hour blocks you still cannot do the four hour activity even though you theoretically have enough time). Add to that the fact that people become more set in their ways, less willing to tolerate other people's "bullshit," and general tiredness it can take a toll on social life.

It doesn't have to. Focus on friends and see them fill your life. Focus on work, and see them deplete. The choice is yours.

Nobody wants to be friends with old(er) people, not even old ones :) I think we should make friendship blind the first year, and then see if my theory holds :p
