You are projecting your own negative experiences with dogs and assuming that is the experience for everyone. Many people have other experiences. They find joy, companionship and protection from dogs. They can enjoy taking care of an animal. If you want to understand why other people like things. You have to move past your won experiences and start by seeking out the experiences of others. Something that might make this harder is your own feelings. Perhaps you hold fear? Understanding yourself will open you up to understanding others. By asking your question you have taken the first step.

such a narrow view on dogs would only make sense in an unfortunate event and circumstances. it's unfortunate if it's that way for you.

I'd say that it's because they give people company, and under certain circumstances are very useful, such as those working in police forces or farms. Some tend to be quite clingy/annoying (granted), but I believe that not all fall under this category, and training may, at times, prove that this behaviors can be adapted
