Someone once asked...
Someone answered with kindness...
A student once told me he felt like a failure. He was twenty-two. I asked him, failure compared to what? He named three friends, their jobs, their apartments. I told him: you're not measuring yourself against them. You're measuring yourself against a version of you that has everything, right now, with none of the years it usually takes. Comparison isn't really about other people. It's a private argument between who you are and who you think you should already be. The other people are just props you've borrowed for the fight.
