female people have a space(uterus) in them to hold fetuses(young babies) and it needs to be a specific environment for the fetus to be held and grow. so the environment is refreshed about once a month. this is done by shedding the lining of the uterus. this lining is blood-like(it also has a lot of blood in it) and leaks out of the crotch for a few days. there are medications that stop the shedding which can be helpful if you have blood problems and cant lose that blood, the hormones(signals that control a lot of processes in people, animals, and plants) can mess up the mind or other parts of the body, people not wanting to accidently start growing a fetus, and some people who just find the process too annoying. the scientific name for a period is menstruation.
