Someone once asked...

“What is the relationship between morality and the law? Is it ever justifiable for morality to diverge from the law?”

Someone answered with kindness...

The law is completely arbitrary, and only based on what people, for thousands of years, believed was moral. Morality, in the same way, is also based on nothing but social conditioning. In many ways, the law fails to abide to society's view of morality: the guilty are deemed innocent, the innocent are deemed guilty, etc. etc. Jeffery Epstein, notorious example, was not punished by law in any way that seems socially acceptable (moral) but his evil wealthy, powerful friends. In MY opinion, the law is bullshit and the justice system is dumb, "morality" and a persons stance on "ethics" or their beliefs and values, should not be based on the law, but rather their own critical reasoning and study. So, yea, morality justifiably diverges from the law all the time, both are arbitrary, and often times i do think the people have to work against the law to achieve what is best for the majority.
