Someone once asked...

“school is hard asf and I make be held back, I don't know what to do because I never learned how to properly study since I came from a school that was extremely easy”

✦

Someone answered with kindness...

I feel you. School used to be really easy for me and I never had to study, but at one point i had to, and i had no clue how to actually study. After years of learning how to study i can tell you what works for me. I read my notes out loud, then i act like a show-host and moderate my notes as if i were in TV.

School can definitely be hard! Try some of these methods, and see if they work (note: you're going to want to use different methods for different subjects, and you may even want to have multiple methods per subject): 1. Pomodoro (Helps with procrastination) -- You study for a set time, then have a break for a set time, then repeat. For example, study for 1 hour, take a break for 10 minutes, then study for an hour, and keep going. 2. Time Blocking (Helps with procrastination) -- On Google Calendar (or whichever one you use), set aside time for studying. Make it very specific! For example, every Monday from 6-8pm, I set aside time to study biology. 3. The '5 Minutes More' Thing (Helps with procrastination) -- Tell yourself that you're going to work on something for just five minutes. Often, you may find that getting started was the problem, ad once you've gotten started, you'll keep going for hours. 4. Focus Apps (Helps with focus) -- Search up 'focus apps' on your app store, and download one that you like. Focus apps allow you to set a time frame in which it'll completely lock your phone, meaning you can't access it, while studying. 5. Breathing (Helps with focus) -- Try breathing excersizes, or just take some deep breaths, when you feel your focus going away. This can help ground you, allowing you to be more present in what you're doing. 6. Flashcards (Helps with studying) -- Write down terms and diagrams you'd need to memorize on flashcards (or do it virtually, on apps like quizlet). This works best with science and history/geography classes. 7. Teaching Someone Else (Helps with studying) -- Whether it be your parents, siblings, friends, or your stuffed animals, assemble a small audience of people and explain the concepts you're learning to them. This allows you to see how good your comprehension is. This works well with any class. 8. Active Recall (Helps with studying) -- Write down everything you know/remember on a particular topic without looking at your notes. Once you're done, review what you missed, then repeat the process. This works best with science and history/geography classes. 9. Practice Problems (Helps with studying) -- Look through textbooks and online to find practice problems, and do as many as possible. Time yourself, as well, to see how quickly you can do them, and try to improve your time. This words best with math and science classes, although it could work with any class! These are just some study methods you can use, but don't be afraid to look online to see what else is out there! Also remember you can always ask your teachers for help! I believe in you! Good luck! <3
