“Over the past few days, I've been mentally exhausted trying to sort out disagreements between my housemates about household chores and cleanliness, while also keeping up with my studies. One of my housemates had a friend staying over, someone I didn't know at all, and throughout the morning he was blasting Instagram reels at full volume while I was trying to study.
When he was about to leave, I decided to make what I thought would be a playful, sarcastic remark. His name happened to be Vincent, so I said something along the lines of, "Hey man, if you're going to watch reels, please turn down the volume or close the door. Your ears seem fine to me. It's not like you've had one cut off like Vincent van Gogh."I genuinely thought he'd laugh, perhaps apologise for the noise, and we'd part on good terms. Instead, he immediately told me that what I'd said was really rude. I apologised and reiterated that I just wanted him to be mindful of the noise. Later, my roommate told me that the comment had come completely out of nowhere and that his friend hadn't taken it well.
I feel incredibly guilty about it. Not because I think my complaint was unreasonable, but because I unintentionally hurt someone when I had absolutely no desire to do so.
What troubles me even more is that this reminds me of experiences I've had since school. Sometimes I try to be sarcastic or playful, but what I intend as humour gets interpreted as an insult. I wonder whether I have a tendency to say things that come directly to mind without sufficiently considering how another person might interpret them.
I don't want to become someone who casually hurts people through thoughtlessness, even unintentionally. I also don't want to lose my personality or become afraid of speaking altogether.”

i think we all have gone through the same shit firstly didn't follow the basic ethic after disturbing you while studying and that's a rude thing. What you said as a joke was completely fine just bcz is got hurt in the sence of ego or insecurity he started calling this out and that's gaslighting what he did to you and you started apologizing for that multiple times leading to make you feel more suppress. With such ppl maintain a distance if possible/maintain clear boundary, you not having clear boundary lead to all that and the reason you didn't set a boundary bcz of the thing. Same thing happen to myself too and the best we chose is the self respect over it. Try not to fix it and don't apologize for it.
