Someone once asked...

If I disappeared for a while, would anyone notice?

Someone answered with kindness...

A young man once asked me this, almost casually, like he was asking about the weather. I didn't answer right away. I asked him instead what "noticing" would actually look like to him. He thought about it and said, "Someone reaching out first. Not because I asked. Because they thought of me." That's usually what's underneath this question — not really "would I be missed," but "does anyone think of me without being prompted." It's a lonelier question than it sounds, and a more answerable one. You don't need to test it by vanishing. You could just ask someone directly: do you think of me, when I'm not in front of you? The people who matter will tell you, if you let them. If this question has been sitting heavier than curiosity lately, please talk to someone — a friend, a counselor, or a crisis line in your area. You deserve to be asked, not just to wonder.
