Someone once asked...

“I am a highly sensitive person and I have never been ashamed of it. I feel for so many things. One incident happened yesterday wherein I found a big snail crossing the road. I showed it to my friends and we went about our way. As we came back, I went to see if it had safely crossed the road but unfortunately i found it to be dead. My friends started to make fun of me and said u will even love snakes. See now you'll go and write a poem about this, somethings like that. I told them like every living being ,whether small or big or insignificant, they deserve the attention and the sadness i felt. Its okay to mourn the loss of that snail. And my friend was like even you would have done it unintentionally many times and its all a normal thing etc etc. I understand that. I understand even i cld have done unintentionally. I have never harmed any being intentionally. But just because of that is it bad to mourn or even spend few seconds just to honor their life. Am i being dramatic and overly sensitive for being like this? I also got hurt when they said about my art. Like I'll go and write poem about it. They would have meant in light fun but I respect my art a lot. I felt bad when it was talked about like that cause art is such a beautiful thing. An art cannot be made simply. It takes efforts right? Please advise me”

Someone answered with kindness...

Hey there! You are not only sensitive but also an empathic person which makes you stand out from the rest of friend group, which in my opinion is good. Also no, you aren't being dramatic or over sensitive at all. You are a conscious human being with kind heart. It's so great to see how deeply you care about animals :) hope you are vegan too. Vegan means not consuming non veg food and dairy products. Because everyday so many animals are killed for food consumption :( Also, you write poetry? That's awesome!! I would really like to read one of your pieces if you are comfortable.

I'll be straight with you. You are hanging out with the wrong people. This is one of those situations where you shouldn't question your own feelings, but question the people you chose to surround yourself with. I'll give you a simple example to bring things into perspective. You are crossing the road and a dog gets hit by a car. Now the very thought itself would send shivers down any average person's spine. But imagine some person tells you to laugh it off claiming that nobody did that on purpose and who cries for a random dog. As if the dog is an inferior being that doesn't deserve your attention or grief. Why would the snail be any different? Does that even make sense? The way I look at it, A) these people are mocking something like an animal dying which is very insensitive and B) they are making fun of your feelings/personality/talent. I would suggest don't blame yourself and question your own feelings or sensitivity. It's a gift to be empathetic and care. The only part I would tweak is how much access you give to these people from here onwards. You don't need to do something dramatic like cutting off their friendship. Just stop letting them into your emotional world and only choose to give this access to people who respect your talent and who you are as a person. Treat their comments like background noise and their company or hangouts like passing time. Only limiting it to fun and nothing more. Never doubt yourself. You are doing better than you think.
