I think that a certain Friedrich Nietzsche is an expert on the subject! ;) Short Nietzsche-style answer: There is no inherent meaning and god is dead. But we can make our own meaning and forge ourselves and witness the self becoming a transformation and a transition from something less to something more.

IMO, being a mentally healthy human being does require some level of delusion. I know that sounds bad.... but the thing is that being realistic isn't realistic. We don't have a purpose, and reality is nonsensical to beings that just want a clear objective!! We need an objective in everything we do. It's the way we are wired. We are not wired to make sense of why the universe is the way it is. Imagine it's the weekend, and you have absolutely no goals or objective.. you end up bedrotting. But, when you have a task or ambition, (even if that's just fixing things around the house) your weekend is filled with purpose. Maybe our lives don't have an overarching purpose other than our own enjoyment. All I know is that to be happy we need to just find some kind of goal to accomplish...
