“Does art imitate reality, or does it transcend it? What is its purpose?”

Someone answered with kindness...

Both. Through imitation, art becomes more than reality., inherently transcending it. As for art's purpose, this is chosen by the artist. Art can truly be for any multitude of reasons. Personally, much of my art is created to inform others about reality.
