I think it doesn't matter if god loved him or not, but what matters is his actions before his death. The reason of his death does not signify god's influence. as for all we know, it could be another being entirely. I say, to answer your question, to look into what that priest has done throughout his life, and may that be the final judgement.

Im not sure, because there are many chances that god loved or if not. From my perspective i think it was an accident with the crusifix, maybe someone sabotaged for some reason. So god loved him def.
